Round two saw the Seniors play their first match for the year at home on Gordon Barnard against Mazenod. With a focus on moving the ball quickly and taking the game on, the boys were keen to put on a show in front of the home crowd.
After a fairly even start, Mazenod put through a few goals late in the first quarter to put us 4 goals down at quarter time. Tom Allwright looked dangerous up forward in his first game back for the year, Phil Bennett was terrific in the back half, and Robbie Campbell was dominating the hit outs, but we couldn’t convert this into scoring opportunities.
The second quarter however, saw us play some great, fast football. We came in at half time a goal up, after holding our opponents to 1 point for the quarter. It was great to see the boys play the fast moving football we have been practicing all pre-season. Tom Kanz was busy up forward and Mitch Trait was getting plenty of it in his debut for the club.
In the second half of the game, Mazenod made the most of their chances and their very accurate goal kicking put us under a lot of pressure. 10 minutes into the last quarter the game could still have gone either way, but unfortunately our opponents stuck to their game plan were able to take the 4 points this time.
It was great to see many of our younger brigade leading from the front this week with Alex Taverner, Damien Proska and Andrew Parker all playing great games. There were many encouraging signs again this week, and we showed that our best is as good as anyone. The challenge now is to sustain that high level of play over 4 quarters. We will be looking to bounce back this week at home vs Oakleigh and get our first win for the year!
