Round 10 Review

Wellers Rattle Undefeated Mazenod

The Seniors had a heart-breaking result on the weekend going down by 6 points to the undefeated Mazenod on their home ground.

The Ressies and Thirds had a tough day at the office, both recording losses.

The Thirds are still looking for topup players. If you know ANYONE who is interested in having a kick, please get them signed up before the registration deadline of end of June. Speak to coach Alex MacKenzie if you are interested.

Seniors

The one that got away!!

The Wellers would take it right up to undefeated competition leaders Mazenod but fall by a goal in a Heart breaking loss out at Central Reserve.

The first half would see the Wellers play some inspiring football, our onballers lead by big man Vickery were on top early. Hart and Adamson were everywhere and the Mazenod boys were struggling to keep pace. The boys were controlling general play with some brave ball movement and precise kicking from our inform half backs Howells and the every reliable Phil Bennett.

The third quarter would see us kick away through some great hard running football from the likes of Allen and hard man Latsas who were continually supplying forwards Eade and the excitement machine Tom Kanz. The boys would go into the last quarter with a 2 goal buffer.

Like all good sides Mazenod would come hard at us early in the last, the boys who had worked so hard all day were beginning to tire. Our structures which had keep us in the game were beginning to fall away and Mazenod with a healthy home crowd would storm home to capture a 6 point win.

Great to see the boys being so brave for most parts of the contest. We just have to learn to play a full 4 quarters and our wins will come soon.

Thanks to all those who traveled and we hope to see you all this week at home.

Reserves

The reserves met a well drilled opposition in Saturday. We started slowly and it was a case of chasing all day. We had one the bench from the start, the battle after the first break was great……

Squid on the half back line drove the ball forward all day, two marks of year contenders – Hookie and Hillier(got off the ground!!! Hanger) Huglin in the ruck all day, Stayner, Vogel, Powell, Kanz, Parker, Steph,Campbell all day were driving the ball forward and defending.

In the third quarter Ben Mann was outstanding and got the side back in a good position. Unfortunately in the last 5 minutes of the third quarter 2.2 was kicked by the opposition, which really let the side out – concentration!

So from here we continue working harder on our skills and concentration, and I am sure this will help the boys having a successful second half of the season.

Thirds
The thirds took on Therry Penola and unfortunately we were unable to come away with a victory as the under manned side took a full compliment of players.
Despite being out numbered the team was terrific in their endeavour as a number of players stepped up to win contests and continued to battle through the game. We adopted the old VAFA line-up of no wings in an attempt to minimise the impact on our forwards.
With the ball spending much time in the defensive half the back six were solid to keep pressuring the opposition and ensure that easy goals were hard to come by with great team work shown by Harry, Webster,Cunningham, Henry, Steve and Lockhart.
In the middle of the ground the team were on top with first use of the ball coming from Coleman in the ruck, while the midfield continued to put pressure and work around the ground to make contest after contest.
The forwards battled hard and made the most of opportunities with Rusty and Charlie showing the way with strong hands in marking contests as well as showing poise at ground level.
Most pleasing was the work of the team to ensure that we fought for the full four quarters and managed to put some scores on the board as well.
We look forward to taking on Kew this week and getting a win on the board.

A huge thanks to those players, supporters, friends and family who made the trek down to GBO to help out! We greatly appreciate the support and assistance.
