Season Postponed until 2nd May

To the incredible OCGAFC community,

These are unprecedented times. The health and safety of our players, coaches, staff, supporters and members is paramount and we extend our thoughts to all parts of our community, hoping everyone is coping as best they can under the circumstances.

Today, due to the increasing spread of COVID-19 across Victoria and Australia, the VAFA has made the decision to postpone the start of the 2020 season until May 2nd. The VAFA will meet again on April 14th to assess the latest health advice and act accordingly.

I have included a link to the announcement here https://www.vafa.com.au/vafa-makes-decision-on-2020-season/ and have tonight met with the Senior Men’s Coach, Anson Brownless and Senior Women’s Coach Alex McKenzie and some of the Committee to discuss what this means for our football plans for 2020.

With immediate effect, all training and practice matches will cease and all planned events including the Season Launch and Football Planning Day will be postponed until further notice.

This is tough news for our sensational coaches, players and administrators given the huge amount of work that has gone into the upcoming season so far. It is also a decision the Club supports 100% given the current situation and the unknown health impacts it represents. I want to be as clear and direct as possible that we are obligated to endorse and support these measures and whatever else comes next to the best of all our abilities. Our community needs to be part of a broader set of actions that will ultimately protect society.

I would encourage everyone to refer to the website here for the latest information regarding symptoms and actions for COVID-19 https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronavirus

As part of our response to these events, we are working closely with some of our expert partners to develop a physical training program and mental health plan for our players and anyone who wishes to access these things. We’re aiming to have these out over the coming week and welcome anyone’s input should they wish to contribute. Please contact Katherine Bithavas (secretary@ocgfc.com.au) or Andrew Romanin (romanin.andrew@gmail.com) for discussion.

As mentioned earlier, we have been busy behind the scenes and I look forward to sharing some of this work shortly. We are currently developing several plans that will ensure we keep communicating about our football club, its personalities and history and to all who contribute to make it special. In times like these we need to stay together, look after each other and plan as best we can for the better times that will come.

If you need to speak with anyone at any stage please do contact Anson, Alex and the rest of our fantastic coaching group or myself on 0499 333 571.

Warm regards and a big thank you to everyone who has supported each other so well to date.
