Semi Final Review – Men Seniors vs Old Geelong

The Wellers fine season would come to an abrupt end after a heartbreaking 7 point loss to a well deserved Old Geelong outfit.

Bill Lawry Oval would be the venue for the Wellers first final in 7 years. Luckily the nerves didn’t show early with the boys getting off to a great start with Nick Adamson dangerous early and our mids Joey ArnoldChook Hensby and Josh Holding leading the way in the middle.

The contest was fierce with our boys putting their bodies on the line at every contest. Old Geelong would look to run us off our feet and were spreading hard at every stoppage, however we would match our fleet footed opponents and take a small lead in the main break with some dynamic end to end football.

The second half would see both sides have many opportunities to win the game. We would move dominant backman Bennett into the forward line and Ben Hart into defence and at times felt we were getting on top in a very even contest.

Old Geelong, however, would make the most of their opportunities and finish the game the better team with 3 last quarter goals. We would fight back late in the game but it was Old Geelong’s day and we would rue many missed opportunities.

The disappointment in the rooms could be seen on everyone faces as we felt at times during the game we had played some great footy but didn’t take our chances when they presented. A big learning curve we will take into the years ahead.

Thanks to all supporters who showed up on the day.
